we begin tonight with the we begin with big protests happening across our country. demonstrators taking to the streets to condemn the election of donald trump. more than 10,000 people marched through manhattan and began prot tower on fifth avenue. >> in chicago, a similar scene. thousands of people marching to the trump tower chanting not my president. so far, the protests have been peaceful and calm. no arrests have been reported. >> thousands of people facing off with police as they march through the streets of philly. many protesters expressing anger

handled. >> hundreds of people gathered in tempe to protest donald trump's victory in a shocking election. the peaceful protest began near university drive before ending on the campus of a.s.u. >> a shooting near an anti-trump rally. five people have been shot, two are in critical condition. the shooting happening near the downtown area feet from where it is unclear if the shooting was relateed to the election. >> tonight, we are learning more about a show low police officer killed in the line of duty. >> officer darrin reed was shot and killed and the shooter was later shot and killed by police

hostage. >> an outpouring of support for the officer's family. >> reporter: we learned the fallen officer was months away from retirement. fellow officers telling us the department has never had to deal with a tragedy like this before. they say reed was a fountain of knowledge and will be deeply missed. a town in mourning one day after one of their own lost his life protecting of show low. the procession of the body of darrin reed made it through the streets this morning. >> so heartbreaking. >> just an extremely sad situation. >> pray for his family and wish him the best. >> reporter: reed was shot and killed by daniel erickson. erickson then fled the scene. he barricaded himself in a

15-year-old hostage for nearly six hours. erickson fired shots at officers, they returned fire killing erickson. >> it is tough. we are all family and friends and we're close. i mean, we see each other every day. >> reporter: the show low police department's sergeant says reed will be greatly missed. >> he is a guy you can be i'm guy and this is what he looks like and he will say that is his whole family was.ell you wh- >> reporter: reed, just 50 years old, was a 10-year veteran and set to retire in february. >> he said he was going to take time off first. he talked about lots of things. he talked about working at tractor supplier.

governor doug ducey ordered flags at half staff through thursday to honor officer reed. >> that is tragic. we have a developing story. tempe police are investigating a case of stranger danger. this playing out at the arizona mills mall. last friday night, this man was seen following children into several stores. he approached some of the kids. if you know who this might be, contact tempe police. there has been an arrest in the hit-and-run death in the phoenix children's hospital doctor, a year after the crash that claimed his life. he was struck and killed while he was riding his motorcycle in june of last year. the suspect ruben santiago lopez fled to mexico but this week turned himself in.

fans but 33,000 fans will descend on glendale and an epic sports event for the first time. yes, something to look forward to. >> gave it to jenkins for the championship. >> reporter: the magic of last spring is five months away here in the valley. while the hoops will be happening in glendale, a lot of the fun will be centered on downtown phoenix. >> downtown is so event driven so having the whole weekend that is going to be t thousands of people downtown will be huge for us. >> it is starting to hit home that we're around the corner from this event. >> reporter: from super bowls to national championships, organizers know how to put on big sporting events but this is the first time that the final four has been west of texas in years. >> we haven't had a facility big enough to host it so this is a great opportunity for us to

and to make a case right away to have this event back here. >> reporter: with the game down the street tonight, the folks at marley's are used to a busy night but add in a four-day fan fest and a music festival going on, a suns' game that thursday and diamondbacks game that sunday. >> it will be crazy but we will be ready. >> reporter: let's hope lacava and richard saenz use all of their vacation time because they won't use it during that time. one thing about knowing the games are happening that weekend and the events in phoenix, transportation is an issue. we talked to dawn and she says there will be shuttle buss in place and light rails and extra services as everyone gets ready for the final four in a couple

you can see it in grand canyon and flagstaff that is the current temperature in the mid 30's. if we zoom up there, you can see the currents and we flip it over to the feels-like temperature. if there is a little wind like it is at the grand canyon, it will take the 35 and turn it into a 30. we stay at 34 and 35 at the snowbowl and flagstaff. not very windy there. however, as we forecast, the forecast is for 29 degrees at the snowbowl and the overnight low forecast at flagstaff is 29. grand canyon is at 28 degrees. we do see those temperatures coming down. john and kari, these temperatures are going to get down into the teens next week. we do see a slight warmup once again toward the later week. the temperatures, once they get into the teens will keep the

respects. nicole garcia has their story. >> we gather together to commends our brother. >> reporter: a dusty, desolate parcel of land in the west valley. no lush green lawn, no headstones this is white tanks cemetery. >> forgive whatever sins they committed. >> reporter: those are without name, without money, without homes or accounts, without loved ones are laid to rest. >> as we commends our brother commit his body to the earth. >> reporter: on this day, kevin doyle was one of six whose funerals were held here. he passed away at the age of 48 at a care center. is not -- not much is known about him. maricopa county could not find any family or friends of his.

there are people and prayers. >> my soul looks for the lord. >> reporter: aubrey was among the inmates, volunteers at the funerals as a member of the mcso chain gang, this is the fourth time she attended the burials. as she arranges dirt in a cross on the casket, she her own life. >> the burials are an emotional thing for me. it is like for me to bury my past and start over. >> reporter: having buried several lonely strangers, the 19-year-old has come to appreciate the time she has ahead of her. >> i detoured from my plan and now i'm here but this is where i needed to be to get my life back on track. it definitely opens your eyes.

multitude of reasons and most of us in their 20's, you realize any of these people could have been you. >> reporter: a 59-year-old was found dead in a parking lot in west phoenix. her cause of the death is still under investigation. 93-year-old regina was buried next to her. she died at an adult living center from congestive center. she had no family, no friends, or other contacts. >> we are there when they didn't have anybody else. so i think it means a lot for all of us to do this for them. >> you restore this to life. >> reporter: volunteers from andre's house in phoenix facilitate the services. local funeral homes are

each burial costs taxpayers $350 and approved after a thorough investigation finds there is no one else who can claim or pay. >> we ask this, through christ our lord. >> maricopa county goes above and beyonond to make sure they e respected during the intournament process. >> reporter: this plays out every thursday with different volunteers but one comes out every week. he does not know who is being buried but he gives them the last show of love. >> he comes out on his own and brings out long-stemmed roses and places roses on each casket before it is lowered. he brings out a beautiful story

southeast at 5 miles an hour. the city looking pretty good tonight. it is a nice night out there. 69 in fountain hills. 71 in scottsdale. 72 in deer valley. surprise, 68 degrees right now. so a nice, very nice temperatures. no cloud cover around the state at all. a little bit of wind still blowing here and there. 26 miles an hour down in tucson and down in douglas an hour. 12 miles an hour up at globe. the winds blew throughout the day today. here we go with the temperature highs on the day. we go to mid 80's at sky harbor. 84 at scottsdale. 82 at gateway and 84 at good year. 72 at prescott. 79 in safford. 90 in yuma and 59 in flagstaff. through the night, the temperature drops off.

down into the 60's and that is a nice night temperature. scottsdale at 60. 61 at deer valley. 56 in surprise. 58 in buckeye. 59 in chandler. the 50's are showing up and they should be because that is where we should be at 55 degrees for the overnight low. we did have 68 this morning. 85 this afternoon. the normal high would be 79. 88 is the record high for the 31 is the record low. er numbers we have are the forecast highs. we're bringing those temperatures down all around the valley here. there is a 78 at cave creek. 79 in apache junction. nice-looking temperatures. 57 is the forecast for flagstaff. 69 at prescott. 82 at gila bend. so we still see the 80's across the deserts. you can see a system up in here. another one approaching the low

changes to the northwest. a few storms across texas and a few storms across the midsection of florida as well. a little bit of active weather in new york and washington as the temperatures hold on for those areas. 66 in washington. 63 in new york. 72 in new orleans. 74 in denver today. look at bismarck at 75. 60's in the northwest. 61 overnight here and 8 79 is the norm. look at the nice-looking temperatures.

the election may be over - but there is still work to the election may be over the election may be over but there are a lot of work to be done to get the votes counted, believe it or not, especially here in maricopa county. these are the votes we're the county recorder says 415,000, did you hear that, 415,000 early ballots have yell yell -- yet to be counted. 55,000 provisional ballots are yet to be counted. we're talking about 500,000 votes that need to be counted. they are trying to county

>> because we received those ballots on the day of the election, they have to be signature verified, processed, and tabulated so that is what we'll be doing, we'll get them ready to tar you late tomorrow. >> we have to find a way to count these, 500,000? this is ridiculous. donald trump is up and this is affecting other races as well voters for sure. workers hope to tabulate 100,000 ballots a day but it could take more than a week before we know the final tally before all of the races. >> i don't know if most voters will accept that. that seems like a big number to not have counted. voter registration, voter registration has been interesting.

200 million for the first time ever. 128 million cast a ballot, which amounts to 55% in terms of turnout that is slightly lower than 2012. in arizona, we hit 70% but this was lower in 2012. here in arizona, 3.5 million voters and two million cast a vote. experts say have been higher if more millennials went to the polls. why did so many choose not to vote in this election? we caught up with a few of them to find out why. this is interesting because this was a block that hillary clinton was counting on. >> reporter: yeah, it really is. most of the students i spoke with at a.s.u. said they didn't like either of the candidates. it did not take all of the

maricopa county record's office to really know that millennials did not turn out this election. pure honesty. >> i did not vote. >> reporter: no voting for you either? >> no, i did not. >> reporter: college students telling me why they did not "waste their time with the election." >> it does not seem right to vote for someone who bickers like children. >> r consultant kurt davis. >> if anybody under performed, millennials under performed. >> it seemed hopeless so i did not want to contribute. >> any time you have a highly negative race and it was a negative race on the presidential level, it oppresses turnout.

>> many latino voters may have been election-day voters, there was a good movement of them into the early ballots. >> reporter: now those are some of the many factors that stood out about the voting trends in maricopa county. coming up at 10:00, we'll talk about the socioeonomic factors as well. prop 206 that was to raise that passed by a landslide last night. it raises the minimum wage to $10 by 201 and -- by 2017 $12 by 2020. >> meantime, prop 205, recreational marijuana failed in arizona although the ballots are

called last night. a lot of people are wondering could the 500,000 votes affect this race? experts called it last night so i don't know. 52% of voters saying no to the measure that would legalize marijuana for recreational use while 48% said yes. arizona is one of five states with recreational marijuana on the ballot and it looks to be the other state that did not pass the it seems like it will pass in maine but the ballots are being counted and the race is too close to call. >> we can expect another attempt at that initiative in two to four years. we're learning more about a raging fire that destroyed a home last night. the fire started in an alley and s.r.p. says the fire climbed a power pole and set a transformer

new at nine. when you new at 9:00, when you think about pageants, a crown is part of it. one valley pageant may be crownless after six crowns were stolen this morning. this is a tragedy. marcy jones has details on the crown caper. i hope they can find them. i don't understand why this wasn't top of the show, kari. this pageant with no crown is like having a cake with no icing. the executive director of miss. scottsdale, miss. maricopa says this goes beyond pretty headgear. >> it symbolizes scholarship and success. >> reporter: it is a shining symbol of all of the hard work

>> i spend hundreds of hours all year long preparing for the pageant and helping the girls become better interviewers and all of that stuff so they can earn college scholarships. >> reporter: nobody knows the worth of a crown more than whitney ford. she now directs miss. scottsdale and miss. maricopa pageants so when the crowns were stolen from her front porch this morning, she was nothing short o devastated. >> there are worse things going on in the world. just for me to feel safe in my own home and step on my porch and know someone isn't going to take something off of my property, i feel like i lost peace of mind. >> reporter: a neighbor saw two people drive up, swipe the packages and flee the scene. >> that is something huge for them to take home with them and to keep for their entire lives

you gave your story about being bullying. give us a glimpse of that and why you decided to do that. >> when i was growing up in elementary, i dealt with bullying. that was one of the things that struck home with me deep in my heart. i went into college to be a special education teacher and to see more of an impact on how bullying is among everyone, not ju but also the buller and the community around and how much of an affect it could havave on someone. >> david johnson will take it into the end zone. >> reporter: how can you help the cardinals the second half of the season? >> biggest thing is running back running the ball and getting the yards needed for an effective
